a Cathedral in the town of Portsmouth, in the county of Hampshire

About Portsmouth Cathedral

Portsmouth cathedral developed out of what was once the local parish church of St.Thomas of Canterbury. It became a cathedral in the first part of the 20th-century (1927), but the church actually dates from late in the 12th-century. The tower and other parts of the building where rebuilt during the 17th-century and there are further enlargements made since the church received cathedral status.

This beautiful white church building has a long, illustrious association with this great naval city, and amongst its many memorials there is one to the crew of the fishing vessel Wilhelmina J, lost at sea on April 10, 1991. There are monuments and memorials from the 17th and 18th-centuries, amongst these is a massive urn to the Duke of Buckingham who was murdered in 1628, this is by the much celebrated artist Nicholas Stone.

Portsmouth cathedral can be found in the old part of the city. It is an attractive church building crowned with a decorative tower, the interior is rich with church treasures gathered over many centuries. It is awesome in its beauty with a wonderful feeling of light and space, giving a calming effect to visitors who enjoy the cathedral for its architecture, and a peaceful place of worship.

When the 20th-century renovations and enlargements were completed in 1991, the cathedral was consecrated at a service attended by Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother
